Science

Research topics at the LCB are grouped in four main axes. This research is highly interdisciplinary combining fields from many disciplines, from biochemistry, genetics and genomics to structural biology, biophysics, quantitative imaging and theory. This research is possible thanks to a unique environment: 

– First, at the Institut de Microbiologie de la Méditerranée, a campus regrouping  four research units all sharing interests in microbiology;

– Second, being part of a several laboratory networks, the Institute for Microbiology, Bioenergies and Biotechnologies  (IM2B), the Turing Center for living systems (CenTuri) and the Insitute for Bioimaging (Imagine)

The LCB is thus deeply connected to the larger biology and biophysics community in Marseille. Beyond, the LCB has a number of international collaborations, in Europe, the USA but also in Asia with Japan and China. Thanks to its connections with the University and the presence of many university professors in the unit, the LCB is very active in training students and postdocs at the national and international levels. Basic research at the LCB is mostly funded by public funding agencies, excellence grants from the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) and the European Research Council (ERC). Applied research linked to antibiotics and pathogens research, bioremediation and detection and energy production are also conducted with several deposited patents matured with SATT-Sud Est or directly with private sector companies (Idylle, x)
